If you’ve visited any forums where people discuss AdSense, you’ll see all kinds of abbreviations and hear all kinds of terms that you might not understand. Also, when you login to your AdSense account for the first time and look at the reports, you’ll see a number of abbreviations as well. Here’s a list of the most common ones, and a plain-english description of what they mean:
Page eCPM
CPM is the cost per 1,000 impressions. For the purpose of ad serving, it is the cost to serve 1,000 ad impressions. You can compare our rates with other ad management solutions. You will see our pricing has the most competitive CPM rates on the market.
Effective CPM
Effective CPM is calculated as Monthly Cost ÷ Impression Limit. It is the unit cost that is only for your reference when comparing one plan to another. This rate is not used to bill for overage. You’re charged by the fixed monthly fee, depending on the plan, and not by the effective CPM rate.
Page Impression
A page impression is generated every time a user views a page displaying Google ads. We will count one page impression regardless of the number of ads displayed on that page. For example, if you have a page displaying three ad units and it is viewed twice, you will generate two page impressions and six ad unit impressions.
Page CTR
CTR is “Click-Through Rate”. It’s a percentage that’s calculated by dividing the total number of times an Adsense Ad is clicked (Clicks) by the total number of times the Ad is shown (Page Impressions).
EPC
In a very simple definition of earnings per click… It is the amount you are earning per click on your advertisements. Your epc is calculated by dividing the total earnings by the number of clicks. Very simple ( $819.50 / 286 clicks = $2.86 * 100 = $286.50 ). Now, Lets remove your cpc and get a much more relevant result.
Cost = (CPC ($0.15) * Clicks(286))
EPC = (EPC - COST)
PROPER EPC = ($271.53)
Channel
A publisher-specified group of pages used for reporting purposes. Publishers can create channels to track specific metrics across pages, sites, and domains.
Ads Filter
Sometimes Google might decide to show ads on your page that aren’t really related to your page content at all. When that happens, you have the option of going into your AdSense account and adding those sites to your Ad Filter. Google will not show ads from any site that you put in your Ad Filter. Also, if your competitor’s ads show up on your pages, that’s another reason to use your Ad Filter.
Ads Unit
AdLinks, or Ad Units, are just another type of AdSense ad. The basic AdSense ad is a block of links with short descriptions that when a visitor clicks, you get paid. Ad Links are a little different. They show linked topics that are related to your page, and when people click on those they are then taken to a different page and presented with a list of ads. If they decide to click on one of those ads, you get paid. You can see what AdLinks look like by visiting Google’s “Ad Formats” page. It shows all of the available ad formats, including Ad Links: https://www.google.com/adsense/adformats
